Description

Planes like this were essential for carpenters. A plane uses a metal blade projecting from the bottom of this tool to shave off thin layers of wood from the surface. This smooths the wood prior to use. Planes are designed to run along the wood grain, not perpendicular to it. Wood Bench Planes offered in the 1897 Sears and Roebuck catalog ranged in size from 2 1/2 to 9 pounds. The wood plane is a 16-inch long 2x2 with a wooden handle and a 2.25-inch shaving blade. A stamp on the bottom of the plane reads "Manufactured By Acmeline Mfg. Co Traverse City, Mich. U.S.A."
