This medal is a replica of the gold lifesaving medal awarded to two Marblehead natives, Lucien M. Clemons and Winslow W. Griesser, “In testimony of heroic deeds in saving life from the perils of the sea” Act of Congress June 20, 1874.
Lucien M. Clemons was awarded the gold medal in 1875 for his heroic action of rescuing two crew members from a capsized sinking schooner shortly after leaving Kelleys Island.
Winslow W. Griesser was awarded the gold medal in 1901 for his heroic action in rescuing crewmembers of two large boats in distress during a storm with 80 miles per hour winds.Location
