Description

Walter Pretzer, the author of the poem, signed the copy "With the deep affection and best wishes of your friend Walter Pretzer 7/19/54." The poem itself is dedicated "To my friends, Louis and Mary." The date and form of the poem's publication is unknown, but presumably it was published before Mary Bromfield's death in 1952. Pretzer lived in the Cleveland, Ohio area and held the office of President of the Vegetable Growers Association of America multiple times in the 1940s and 1950s. This brought Pretzer and Bromfield into the same circles. Pretzer would eventually become part of Friends of the Land, an organization devoted to conservation, along with Louis Bromfield and other notable figures such as nature writer Aldo Leopold, New Deal organizers, and former Secretary of the Agricultural Adjustment Administration for the United States Department of Agriculture Russell Lord.
