Description

The April 1949 issue of Railroad Magazine features an example of an advertisement for Calvert Reserve Whiskey showing four of Bromfield's boxers and his cat Lana Turner sitting on chairs around a table with a whiskey bottle and glasses. The story goes that Bromfield turned down Calvert's request to be featured because he did not drink the whiskey. However, he offered his dogs in their place because they "don't care what whiskey they drink." Calvert Reserve did not advertise with only Bromfield's dogs, though. They used other ads with animals. For instance, an advertisement from 1943 featured kangaroos giving tips for wartime. A 1945 advertisement used the very popular wire fox terrier--like Asta from the Thin Man movies--for the holiday seasons. Calvert-Maryland Distillers, later called Calvert Distillery Corporation, produced Calvert Reserve whiskey. First opened quickly after Prohibition ended in 1933, Calvert-Maryland Distillers would eventually be bought by Seagrams, then sold again in 1991.
