This sterling silver dish features four Roman soldier medallions and a decorative leaf etching pattern along the edges. M.W. is engraved in the middle of the dish, which refers to Mary Appleton Wood, Louis Bromfield's wife.
The dish is stamped on the bottom with Wm. Gale Jr & Co New York. William Gale's silversmithing company went through many iterations between 1822-1872. The Wm. Gale Jr. & Co stamp can be traced to a period from 1867-1868, long before Mary Appleton Wood's birth in1892. The initials may have been added after the dish was bought, or it may be referring to another member of the Wood family.Location
