Ethel was employed by the Survey from 1905–1906 as secretary to State Geologist Edward Orton Jr. She returned to the Survey in 1914 during the early years of World War I. She was a secretary, a geological assistant, an author, an editor, a librarian, and a Survey historian.
During her tenure with the Survey, she edited over 40 geological publications. She was also coauthor of Bulletin 34: Analyses of the coals of Ohio and compiler of Report of Investigations 4: Additional analyses of coals of Ohio. In 1953, Ethel received a Certificate of Merit from the Nash Conservation Awards for her interest and enthusiasm in all phases of conservation.
At the time of her retirement, she had compiled a list for then State Geologist John Melvin listing all those who worked for the Ohio Geological Survey beginning in 1837. Her archival efforts are just as vital now as they were over 70 years ago.Photograph Details

Ethel Dean deserves so much credit for the continuation of the Ohio Geological Survey. During the Great Depression in the 1930s she was one of only three survey employees. She held the agency together during a difficult time for both the Survey and the entire United States.Collection
