Big House Sketch by Louis Bromfield

Description

This is the original sketch Louis Bromfield provided Louis Lamoreaux for how he wanted the Big House to look.

Context

In 1939, Bromfield hired Lamoreux, an architect from Mansfield, to design a house for him at his new farm in southern Richland County, Ohio. Lamoreux would also serve as the general contractor for the work. The old Clement Herring farmhouse was incorporated into the new structure. It is that part of the Big House to the left of the main entrance. Louis Andre Lamoreux was born in Providence, Rhode Island, on January 4, 1895. He graduated from Cornell University and served as a Captain during WWI and a Major during WWII. He opened an architectural office in the Farmers National Bank in Mansfield, Ohio, about 1922. Lamoreux died on November 3, 1975, and was buried at Mansfield Memorial Cemetery. - Research and text by Thomas Bachelder of the Malabar Farm Foundation
