Daum Crystal Glass

Context

Daum is a crystal glass studio in Nancy, France. It was founded in 1878 by Jean Daum. Jean Daum died in 1885, and his sons Antonin (1853-1909) and Auguste (1864-1931) took over the operation of the studio. They saw the studio proliferate during the Art Nouveau period, when it became one of the major forces in that art movement. At the Universal Exhibition of 1900, Daum won the “Grand Prix” Medal. Today Daum is the only commercial crystal manufacturer using the pate-de-vene (glass paste) technique to produce art glass and crystal sculptures. This is an ancient Egyptian method of glass casting where crushed glass is packed into a mold and fused in a kiln. - Adapted from research and text by Thomas Bachelder of the Malabar Farm Foundation
