Description

The first electrically powered iron was patented in the United States in 1882. Prior to this time, irons would be heated on the stove, in the fire, or by filling the iron with hot coals or lit kerosene. These were all very unsafe and led to many injuries and deaths. Abe O. Samuels patented the design for the Seneca Adjustable Automatic iron in 1931. He explains in the patent that this design intends to simplify the manufacturing of sad irons and to improve the reliability of the thermostatic control.
