Description

This sterling silver christening bowl was originally for Mary's brother Francis Appleton Wood. However, after he was killed in WWI, it was re-engraved for her wedding to Louis Bromfield. The inscription reads 25 December 1894 and Francis Appleton Wood. Francis Appleton Wood was born in June of 1894 and was killed in action in September 1918 . The other side of the bowl is engraved Mary Appleton Wood on her wedding day. Mary Appleton Wood and Louis Bromfield were married in October of 1921.

Context

According to Thomas Bachelder of the Malabar Farm Foundation: Howard and Company was founded in 1866 and by the 1880s was a leading American producer of fine silver products. They also established a reputation as dealers in antique English silver. The Company closed in 1922. This piece has the following three inscriptions etched into it. Side: Francis Appleton Wood Opposite side: Mary Appleton Wood on her wedding day Bottom: December 25, 1894. Mary Appleton Wood was the wife of Louis Bromfield. They were married on October 16, 1921. Francis Appleton Wood was Mary's brother. He was born on June 2, 1894. The bowl was most likely given to Francis on his first Christmas. Lt. Francis Appleton Wood was an aviator during World War I. He was killed in action in 1918.
