Context

Louis Bromfield collaborated with Walt Disney on the 1938 Disney cartoon Ferdinand the Bull. Bromfield wrote the script for the film, adapting it from the 1936 Munro Leaf children's book The Story of Ferdinand. Although there are some differences between Bromfield's adaptation and Munro Leaf's original story, the Bromfield version closely follows the original words of Leaf. The cartoon was released on November 25, 1938, and won an Academy Award. (Short Subject - Cartoons) The only film credits appear at the beginning of the eight-minute cartoon, stating that it was adapted from the Munro Leaf story, with illustrations by Robert Lawson. These two individuals are the only persons given any credit. In 1939, Disney gave Bromfield's daughters two celluloid images from the cartoon. Both art pieces are from the beginning of the film; one is of Ferdinand as a calf, and the other is of Ferdinand's mother, adorned with a cowbell. - Adapted from research and text by Thomas Bachelder of the Malabar Farm Foundation
