2022.2.104.05Description
Oars and life preservers are showcased alongside the restored 1931 Coast Guard surf boat at the Marblehead Life Saving Station.
The longer oar is a steering oar. It has a thick grip and did not have a provision for oarlock hardware but was held in position with a rope bridle. The oar material is reported to be made of Philippine (soft) mahogany. While the surf boat accompanying the oars has an engine and a rudder, it also has a mounting board at the stern for a steering oar if the rudder is damaged.
The life preservers date back to the 1930s. Life preservers during that period were constructed with cork for buoyancy. The cork blocks were either placed on the outside of the preservers or the inside and covered with material.Location
