Description

Three Coast Guard boat models on display include the USCG Mackinaw, USCG Mallow, and USCG 44' Lifeboat. The Great Lakes icebreaker USCGC Mackinaw (WLBB 30) can break up to 32 inches thick at continuous speeds of 3 knots. Commissioned in 2006, this 240-foot heavy icebreaker is the largest Coast Guard vessel on the Great Lakes. The USCG 44-foot Lifeboat is one of the most revered rescue boats in the U.S. Coast Guard's history due to its design for very specific conditions of seaworthiness, ease of handling, speed, weight, draft, strength, and capacity. Many of the 1960's-era lifeboats are still operational worldwide. The USCGC Mallow (WLB-396) was an Iris-class buoy tender belonging to the United States Coast Guard launched on 9 December 1943 and commissioned on 6 June 1944. The vessel was built to perform search and rescue missions, carry out law enforcement duties, and conduct ice-breaking operations. Additionally, it served in times of peace and war.
