Description

These leather ice cleats with metal spikes show their wear and no doubt crossed over many frozen lakes and rivers in their time. Ice cleats are worn over a shoe or boot. They were used for a more secure grip while walking on snow or ice. One of the more common uses for ice cleats was ice harvesting. Before modern refrigeration, ice harvesting from frozen lakes and rivers was an important industry and crucial for the shipment of various foods. January and February were the prime ice harvesting months when ice was harvested like a crop to keep food cold throughout the summer months.
