Charles Hunter, or 'Cap' as he was referred to, was the Marblehead Lighthouse Keeper from 1903 to 1933. 'Cap' was known for enjoying his pipe and was often photographed with it in hand.
Being a lighthouse keeper was not a job for the weak. Keepers lived at the lighthouse, which meant they were available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and rarely took time off. Keepers were responsible for taking care of the entire light station and were highly skilled and dedicated men and women. Some of their duties included maintenance tasks, painting, cleaning, winding clocks, replacing bulbs or trimming wicks, checking automated systems, using fog signals, weather readings, and anything else that needed to be repaired. They also assisted with search and rescue efforts.Location
