Description

Marblehead Lighthouse Keepers from 1822 - Present. While a lighthouse keeper's primary responsibility was to watch the light, being a lighthouse keeper was one of the most challenging jobs. They worked long, grueling hours and had to be willing to put their own lives in danger to keep others safe, working in all kinds of inclement weather. Keepers lived at the lighthouse and were at work 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and were responsible for taking care of the entire lighthouse station. They were highly skilled and dedicated men and women. Some of the keeper's duties included maintenance tasks, painting, cleaning, winding clocks, replacing bulbs or trimming wicks, checking automated systems, using fog signals, weather readings, and anything else that needed to be repaired, replaced, or cleaned. They also assisted with search and rescue efforts.
