Description

Lighthouse crewel embroidery by Charles Hunter. Charles Hunter was the Marblehead lighthouse keeper from 1903 to 1933 and is known to have the longest tenure as head keeper. Crewel work is a beautiful, traditional and ancient form of embroidery using wool to create a slightly raised feature on a linen twill fabric background. While a Lighthouse Keeper's job encompasses many duties day and night, in Charles Hunter's downtime, he was known to enjoy his pipe and hobbies that included creating tapestries, painting, storytelling, writing short stories, and music. But his passion was caring for the Lighthouse. Some of the keeper's duties included maintenance tasks, painting, cleaning, winding clocks, replacing bulbs or trimming wicks, checking automated systems, using fog signals, weather readings, and anything else that needed to be repaired, replaced, or cleaned. They also assisted with search and rescue efforts.
