Frances K. Hutchinson MedalContext
The Garden Club of America was founded in 1913. Its goal is to promote horticulture, conservation, and the enjoyment of gardening. It currently has about 18,000 members in 200 local gardening clubs across America.
In 1940, the club began awarding the Frances K. Hutchinson Medal "… to recognize figures of national importance for distinguished service to conservation." The Award was established in Frances K. Hutchinson's memory with an endowment from the Lake Geneva Garden Club, which she had founded. Louis Bromfield was the recipient of the Award in 1943.
Other Award recipients have included: Edmond O. Wilson, 1997; Roger Tory Peterson, 1970; Lady Bird Johnson, 1968; Walt Disney, 1954; and Rachel Carson, 1952.
