Description

War Ration Book Four and a set of stamps are matted and framed here. The ration book is numbered 958748BN and is signed Anna Elizabeth Carpenter. A variety of stamps are included. During WWII, the United States government instituted limits on consumers which were managed by the Office of Price Administration. The first rations were on non-food items, such as tires and cars, but items like sugar were added fairly quickly. The administration distributed this book toward the end of 1943. The stamps were used on a points system, with the exception of sugar and coffee. The points for each item being rationed was explained on a chart, and the points would change depending on the availability of the individual items.
