Context

No artist is identified on the prints, but names of printers and a publisher are provided. The lithograph was done for “Grobon Freres” (Grobon Brothers). In addition, there are three other names listed on the piece. Victor Delarve, Auguste Bry, and Gambart. Delarve was a Paris publisher of photographs and art prints and was active from 1863-to 1864. Auguste Bry was a copperplate engraver and lithographer. The most interesting name on the print is Gambart. This is Jean Joseph Ernest Theodore Gambart, born in Belgium in 1814. The son of a printer, bookbinder, and bookseller, Gambart moved to Paris in 1833, where he opened his own printing and paper-making shop. In 1840, he moved to London, and in 1842 went into business with a Mr. Junin, forming the company Gambart and Junin. The new company specialized in importing European art prints and soon established a reputation as a leading publisher of fine art prints. In 1849 Gambart expanded into exhibiting and selling original art. His friendly yet highly professional relationships with artists and art buyers became a model for how a modern art business should run. Jean Gambart died in 1902. - Research and text by Thomas Bachelder of the Malabar Farm Foundation
