Description

This wooden box was used to store dynamite by the Austin Powder Company in Cleveland, Ohio. The edges of the box are connected using interlocking box joints. The I.C.C. on the side stands for Interstate Commerce Commission, the first regulatory commission in the United States formed by the Interstate Commerce Act of 1887 to insure safe conveyances. The '14' indicates the box was constructed according to certain regulations to secure the contents and protect the shipper from accidental explosions. The Austin Powder Company dates from 1833 and supplies explosives to the construction and mining industries, which they still do
