Description

This wooden box was used to store black pellet powder by the Austin Powder Company in Cleveland, Ohio. The sides of the box .have built in ledges to use as handles when carrying. The I.C.C. on the side stands for Interstate Commerce Commission, the first regulatory commission in the United States formed by the Interstate Commerce Act of 1887 to insure safe conveyances. The '14' indicates the box was constructed according to certain regulations to secure the contents and protect the shipper from accidental explosions. The Austin Powder Company dates from 1833 and supplies explosives to the construction and mining industries, which they still do.
