The walking stick is reportedly made with wood from Commodore Perry's flagship, Niagara, and given to Captain Lucian Clemons by the Erie Lifesaving Station.
The USS Niagara, a wooden-hulled warship, served as Oliver Hazard Perry's second flagship during the 1812 Battle of Lake Erie after his first flagship, Lawrence, became disabled, causing him to transfer to the Niagara.
In 1875 Lucien M. Clemons was awarded the Gold Lifesaving Medal for his heroic action in rescuing two of six crew members from a capsized sinking schooner shortly after leaving Kelleys Island carrying cargo.Location
