Description

Erika Danielson is a geologist in the Energy Resources Group within the Ohio Geological Survey. She studies subsurface bedrock units in Ohio by using drill cores, well cuttings, and data from oil-and-gas wells to map bedrock properties in the subsurface. Currently, she is working on mapping properties that of Devonian shale units that will help to assess how these rocks can be useful resources. Most of her research involves rock units that are of interest as sources of hydrocarbons, part of carbon storage systems, or part of critical mineral deposits. When asked what her favorite part of her job, she said “I love helping others learn about Ohio’s geology. Geology plays a huge role in our society, but often in the background. And I love uncovering bits of Earth history from the rock record. It’s fascinating how so much of what we know about life on Earth comes from the rocks. Sharing that with others and helping people make the connections between the Earth, its history, its resources, and our lives is always exciting.”
