Description

This framed photo of the North Bay Lime Kilns can be found on the wall at the Kelleys Island State Park's office.

Use

Steam shovels were used to load limestone into dump cars headed for the crusher. The limestone, after being crushed, travels across conveyor belts into storage bins. Steam engines, known as, Shay locomotives were driven into the crusher building under the bins, so the rail cars could be filled with crushed limestone. The Shay locomotives then transport the crushed limestone into storage bins on the dock. Here the limestone would either go into the lime kiln or on a boat for sale on the mainland.

Context

Founded in 1886, the Kelley Island Lime & Transport Company was once the worlds largest producer of limestone and lime. Lime is created when the limestone is burned at the high temperatures created inside kilns. Lime is a widely used fertilizer and it is also a key ingredient in the making of mortar.
