2022.2.27.13Description
This photograph of a Kelleys Island Limestone Crusher hangs in the office of the Kelleys Island State Park.Use
This photo offers us a rare view of the entire crusher system at work. As smoke rises from the generating plant next door, dump cars enter the crusher on the top left of the building. The limestone, after being crushed, will travel across conveyer belts into storage bins and wait for a Shay locomotive to back into the crusher, as we see in this photo. The rail cars will be filled with crushed limestone that the Shay will take to the storage bins on the dock where the limestone will wait for further transport.
In this photo we also see one Shay locomotive busily passing by in front of the crusher, while another sits off to the right in the locomotive house.Context
The demand for crushed limestone to aid in the manufacturing of steel was high and by the end of the 20th century, more than 500 workers were employed by the Kelleys Island Lime & Transport Company.Location
