Description

This replica of the Adventure, a lime transport ship is on display at the Kelleys Island State Park Office.

Use

The Adventure was used to transport burned limestone in wooden barrels from Kelleys Island to the mainland.

Context

The Adventure was a schooner built in 1875 and later converted to a propeller steamer. Used in the transport of burned limestone to Sandusky, Ohio from Kelleys Island, the Adventure caught fire at the dock on October 7th, 1903. The Adventure sunk about 200 feet offshore in the Kelleys Island North Bay. This replica is dedicated to the memory of Duke DuShane, a well-known scuba diver who assisted the Toledo fire department and other law enforcement with police search and rescues. At the time of his death, Duke was serving on the Advisory Committee for the proposed Kelleys Island Underwater Shipwreck Preserve.
