This picture, taken circa 1900, inside a blacksmith shop on Kelleys Island features Phillip Roswurm shoeing a horse with Fred Baumler holding the horseshoe and John Guerin holding the horse.Context
Philip Roswurm was on the 1913 Kelley's Island Ball Team, and he was known for leading the grand march in the masquerades held in the 1930s. Philip Roswurm also played on the Kelleys Island Brass Band in 1894.
The Guerin family was said to have come to America before 1900. The family consisted of a mother, father, and four children, named John, James, Michael, and Mary (Mamie).
Records were found of Fred Baumler donating to the church and moving to a new address off the island in 1922.
While we can see that this blacksmith shop was used to make and shoe horses, it may have served a dual purpose. The Kelleys Island Lime & Transport Company also required a blacksmith shop to assist with the maintenance of both narrow-gauge rolling stock and steam cranes as they are needed in the large-scale production of flux stone.Location
