Context

Francois-Nicolas Martinet (1760-1800) was a French engineer, engraver, and naturalist. He engraved plates for numerous works of natural history, especially those dealing with ornithology. In addition, he engraved images for some of the most important French ornithologists of the 18th century. His work was highly appreciated for its realism, unlike most earlier works that depicted birds incorrectly in stiff and unnatural poses. - Research and text by Thomas Bachelder of the Malabar Farm Foundation
