The local railroad, constructed in the 1880s, was used to transport limestone from the Marblehead quarries. It was one of the shortest railroad lines in the U.S, with only seven miles in length. Charles Hunter was the Marblehead lighthouse keeper from 1903 to 1933 and enjoyed hobbies that included painting, creating crewelwork tapestries, storytelling, writing short stories, and music.
