Description

This is a cast iron stove in the 'pot belly' style with an outer insulating shell. The inner stove is marked with "West Virginia Foundry and Stove Company, Huntington, West Virginia, Number 24, WESCO" while the outer shell is embossed with "Waterbury System." According to an advertisement in the School Education journal from January 1908, the Waterbury system boasted that it was "the one right way to Heat and Ventilate your school." The Waterbury shell was intended to provide airflow that drew away harmful smoke from the classroom.
