Mildred Fisher Marple was born on November 11, 1898. She earned a bachelors in Geology in 1921, a masters in Geology in 1922, and her doctorate of geology in 1950 from The Ohio State University. A paleontologist by training, Marple is the co-author of the first edition of Bulletin 54: Ohio Fossils. She specialized in micropaleontology and published many papers on Paleozoic ostracodes and forminerifera.
In 1945 she joined the staff at The Ohio State University as an instructor, and in 1950 became the curator of the Orton Geological Museum while also serving as a staff geologist for the Ohio Geological Survey. In 1955 she left the Survey to serve as an Assistant Professor at The Ohio State University and curator of Orton Geological Museum until her retirement in 1959. As curator of Orton Museum, she was well known for her attention to detail and the responsibility she showed in preserving and recording the materials in her care. As a professor, she was well known for her wide knowledge of geology and her helpfulness to her students. She served as a role model for many young women geologists.
During her tenure she authored Information Circular 13: Geology of Lake Hope State Park and Information Circular 15: Handbook for teachers of earth science.Photograph Details
