Jade FigurineContext
Jade is a generic word for two different gems: nephrite and jadeite. It is an ornamental metamorphic stone found worldwide but more commonly in China, Canada, New Zealand, Russia, and Guatemala.
Jade has been known to man since at least 5000 BC. As early as 3000 BC, the Chinese considered jade to be the "royal gem." The name jade comes from the Spanish "piedra de ijada" or loin-stone. Jade was believed to be a remedy for kidney ailments by the native populations that the Spanish encountered in their invasions of the Americas.
The value of jade is determined by its color, intensity, texture, clarity, and transparency. In the United States and Europe, green jade is regarded as particularly favored. However, in east Asia, pure white jade and yellow jade with subtle pink undertones are highly valued.
