Arthur Hawkins was born in Cumberland, Maryland in 1903 and studied at the Art Students League in New York. He worked primarily in New York and New Jersey, becoming known for his book jacket illustrations, poster art, and poster design. Hawkins died in 1987. He is one of the more obscure artists represented in the Big House collection, but Bromfield did have two of his ink sketches, including a portrait by him.
