2022.2.32.46Description
Some trace the introduction of steins to the 14th century, prompted by the bubonic plague and several fly invasions. The attached lid prevents sickness and flies from entering a beverage. Others question this history, as people at the time did not believe the disease was spread by insects or contamination.
This particular stein was hand-crafted in Brazil and manufactured by Avon in 1990. It is blue in color with fish hand-crafted onto the surface and the lid. The handle resembles a fishing rod and reel with the hook carved on the pewter lid hinge.
Avon was founded in 1886 and sells products in over 100 countries, Brazil being the largest market outside of the United States since the 1990s. The company was acquired by a Brazilian cosmetics company in 2019.Location
