Description

This type of ice skaters lantern was popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It is a small kerosene lamp with a brass base and top. A clear, glass globe sits on the base with a visible wick that is moved up and down by a small wheel on the outside of the base. A thin wire handle is attached to the vented, brass top. Skaters would use these lanterns to see while skating at night. One lantern would be carried onto the ice and the other lantern would sit on the shore as a way to mark where their belongings were waiting. This lantern was manufactured by Perkins Marine Lamp Corporation. Perko (Perkins Marine Lamp Corp) was established in 1907 and is still a privately owned, family operated corporation five generations later.
