Description

This chamber pot with a cover and a crochet silencer is porcelain with a wire handle attached. Chamber pots were used so people would not need to go to the outhouse and were in use mainly in the evening. The crocheted silencer would keep the lid from clanging and awakening the house, and the wire handle would make it easier to move to empty down in the outhouse later. Chamber pots were widely used until the 19th and the early 20th centuries. In fact, indoor plumbing was only becoming available in the United States in the 1930s and 1940s. Chamber pots are still in use today in some countries where indoor plumbing is limited or unavailable.
