This display depicts how women used curlers in three different time periods, the 1930s, the 1940s, and the 1960s. This wig is sitting on a cork canvas block head wig display.
The 1930s example is a Mervin aluminum wave clip. This clip was advertised as being able to "pinch the ridges tightly and give your waves that professional look." The Mervin aluminum wave clips were ideal for setting permanents.
These 1940s Tip Top curlers were used for "Beautiful Curls and For Quick Drying." Made out of aluminum, these curlers open and close to hold hair tight. Each curler has a rubber tip at the end of the wire. The Tip Top Products company patented a design for the first metal hair curler in 1936. The company was located in Omaha, Nebraska until 1981 when the company was bought by a Minnesota company and had its name changed to Faberge.
These 1960 pink plastic hair curlers have snap-on holders to keep the curl in place while it sets. These curlers are used on wet hair, and they stay in place until the hair dries completely and then they are removed. This is an easy way to curl hair without any heat damage.Location
