Ship's Splicing FidEntry/Object ID
2022.2.32.67Description
This twelve-inch wooden splicing fid would have been found on any sailing boat in the 18th - 19th century. It is used to create a hole for splicing the rope. This fid can also be used to open knots and hold open holes.
The fid has evolved overtime. Now they are made from metal or plastic, and they include markings that follow rope sizes. Most fids now have a metal, hollow end at the pointed side to allow the rope to be pulled through as the hole is being made, whereas the wooden fid takes two steps to complete a splice.Location
