Description

These silver manual hair clippers were manufactured in the 19th century by the Shapleigh Co in St. Louis. A.F. Shapleigh began a clerkship with Rogers Brothers and Company at 19 years old, after the death of his father. He would become a junior partner before opening a branch in St. Louis, Missouri. This branch was the beginning of Shapleigh Hardware. A successful wholesaler, Shapleigh Hardware had an immense collection of merchandise that included not only razors but also general tools, shoemakers', tanners' and carpenters' tools, some harness equipment, firearms and ammunition, animal traps, cutlery, pocket and hunting knives, the some household products, farming implements, and musical instruments.
