This Comet Red Dietz kerosene lantern is made out of tin, stands 8.5" tall, and weighs about 12 oz. Brass plates sit at the top and the bottom of this lantern. The production month and year is inscribed on Comet lanterns produced between 1915 and 1956. Although, it is difficult to read the date on this particular lantern, an S is visible to the right of the fuel cap indicating that it was produced in the Syracuse factory.
Robert Edwin Dietz started the Dietz Company at age 22 in the year 1840. At one time, the Dietz Company produced candle lanterns and sperm whale oil lamps. The Dietz Comet Lantern became the official lantern of the Boy Scouts from early post WWII until the 1960s. The R.E. Dietz Company moved from the United States to Hong Kong in 1956 and then to China, stopping production in the United States in 1992.Location
