This Underwood open-framed manual typewriter was most likely manufactured between 1930-1950.
"German-Austrian inventor Franz Xavier Wagner created the first Underwood Typewriter. This he sold to John T. Underwood. Between 1896 and 1900 (four-five years), the pair made the No. 1 and No. 2 models under Wagner Typewriter Co’s patent" (Halder).
By the 1920s, the Underwood Typewriter upgraded their typewriter to be equipped with front striking bars, single shift keys, and a four row straight keyboard. The front striking bar allowed the writer to see any typed errors immediately, while before they needed to lift the carriage to see what had been typed.
Underwood typewriters with four-row keyboards were manufactured after 1930. Electric typewriters were not far behind.
In 1963, the Underwood company sold its controlling stake and merged with Olivetti.Location
