This small watercolor is simply signed “Jim” in the lower right corner. In the upper left corner are the French words “Prisonners Grottes de Soissons Juillet 1918” This translates to “Prisoners, Cave of Soissons, July 1918.”
Soissons is a town in the Aisne department in Picardy, northern France. The World War I Battle of Soisson took place on July 18-22, 1918. In this battle, with help from their American and British allies, the French were able to recapture most of the land lost to the Germans during their spring offensive of May 1918.
In this four-day battle, French casualties numbered 125,000, Americans 12,000, and British 13,000. German losses numbered 168,000.
