Description

Waffle irons have a long and broad history. Evidence of their use exists in Ancient Greece and Medieval Europe. These early examples were simplistic, although the designs etched into them might not be, and did not protect users from burns. In 1869, Cornelius Swartwout patented an improvement to waffle iron design that made them safer and easier to use on standard wood stoves. The electric design, such as the one pictured here, began with a General Electric patent in 1911. This Westinghouse model, Catalog No. WB-501, was made in Mansfield, Ohio. Westinghouse holds an important place in Mansfield history, employing more than 8,000 people at one point. The factory was active from 1918-1990. The factory was demolished in 2021.
