Description

These 1950s mannequins were used as a display for Buster Brown and Mary Jane Shoes. They are now displayed at the Nature Center at Lake Loramie. The girl is wearing a red flowered skirt handmade from a feed sack, a button up white blouse, and a straw hat. The boy is wearing jeans with a rope belt, a striped tee-shirt and a straw hat. The Brown Shoe Company began in 1878. A child, Buster Brown, and his dog, Tige, became the mascots for the shoe company. Buster Brown had a sweetheart named Mary Jane, so the Company bought the licensing rights for "Mary Jane" for their line of girls' strap shoes. The Brown Company often used child-size mannequins at their stores to display their shoes. The Brown Shoe Company is still in business, but is now called Caleres.
