Description

This red, yellow, and green painted rooster pitcher was part of Mrs. Bromfield's rooster collection. The bottom is marked "made in Czechoslovakia," which indicates it was likely made from 1918-1938. After World War II, soldiers returned home with Hummel figurines from Germany which played a role in making figurine collecting more widespread. Rooster pitchers specifically have a long history in Italy. Legend has it that a rooster alerted Giuliano Medici to intruders. Those intruders were hired assassins, and Medici credited the rooster with saving his life. He then hosted a party with rooster shaped pitchers in the bird's honor. Roosters also hold a significant place in French culture. The rooster was even used as a symbol for the Resistance in WWII.
