Ohio Geological Survey office building on Grandview Avenue in Grandview Heights, Franklin County, Ohio. James Wooten is working with samples. He is washing drill cuttings at the sample washing basin to clean dirty samples received from industry operators. The photograph was taken in 1969.
Unwashed samples are placed in cloth bags and attached to the rotating wheel. Then fresh water is continuously supplied while it drains at the bottom of the basin at the same rate of flow. This allows the fine particulates of silt, clay and chemical byproducts from drilling to be rinsed clean. Once they’ve been washed and dried, each sampled interval is placed into its own envelope for repository storage.
The Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Geological Survey's main office was located at 1207 Grandview Avenue, Grandview Heights, Ohio 43212 from 1962 through May 1973. The Geological Survey's offices were on part of the first floor and all of the second floor of the building. The Grandview office had a complete geochemistry laboratory in the southwest quarter of the first floor. More informally, rooms with coal polishing equipment, microscopes, and other types of equipment were located in various spaces at Grandview office.
Information about the history of the Survey's facilities is available in Survey Opens New Core and Sample Repository by Merrianne Hackathorn (Ohio Geological Survey, Ohio Geology Newsletter, No. 4, 1999).
