Description

Michele L. Risser using a binocular microscope for laboratory work at the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, Division of Geological Survey's Fountain Square campus on Morse Road, Columbus, Ohio. Binocular microscopes were used for low power observation of coarse rock fragments (for example: rock cuttings from oil and gas wells). Geologists examine these fragments to identify general classifications of rocks such as shale, sandstone, limestone, granite, etc. Michele worked in the Ohio Geological Survey's Regional Geology Section from 1974 to 1982. The Ohio Geological Survey's main office was located at Fountain Square on Morse Road, Columbus, Ohio 43229 from May 1973 to the present. The Geological Survey's offices were on the first and second floors of Building B from May 1973 until a move to the first and second floors of Building C in January 2005. Information about the history of the Survey's facilities is available in Survey Opens New Core and Sample Repository by Merrianne Hackathorn (Ohio Geological Survey, Ohio Geology Newsletter, No. 4, 1999). Information about Michele L. Riser's career with the Ohio Geological Survey appears in the article Michele L. Risser, 1952-1987 by Dennis N. Hull (Ohio Geological Survey, Ohio Geology Newsletter, Summer 1987), page 7. This slide image included in the USGS National Digital Catalog for NGGDPP Grant G15AP00115 in FY2015.
