The copy camera used by the Technical Publications Section of the Ohio Geological Survey. The image was made in 1980. The Ohio Geological Survey's main office was located at Fountain Square on Morse Road, Columbus, Ohio 43229 from May 1973 to the present. The Geological Survey's offices were on the first and second floors of Building B from May 1973 until a move to the first and second floors of Building C in January 2005.
In an e-mail from Lisa Van Doren on July 21, 2016: This camera takes up two of the three rooms of the photo lab. In this room there is the camera lens. The lens can be moved forward or backward. The glass panel in front is a vacuum frame. Place a positive or negative (film or otherwise) on that glass, pull down the plastic cover, and vacuum out the air for a tight and flat fit to the glass. This frame can be moved back and forth too—these adjustments created the percentage of enlargement or reduction. On the other side of the wall (second room) is a smaller vacuum for film and the controls for this big camera. So, basically you are taking a photo (enlarged, same size, or reduced) of what’s on the big vacuum frame you see here and getting the image on the film you’ve placed on the small vacuum in the room you don’t see here. In this picture (S02.08.036.tif) you can also see one of the two exposure lighting setups. On the right side of the photo you can see three lights on a pole (there’s one of these poles with lights on the other side of the lens—hard to see at first). They are pointed toward the vacuum frame and were only occassionally tweaked for position. The second exposure method (that you can’t really see) was a horizontal light bar that would move from the top of the vacuum frame to the bottom. This bar faced the lens from behind the vacuum frame. Both methods were timed for whatever film we were using.
