James A. Brown working on a cartography project for the Technical Publications Section at the Ohio Geological Survey’s Fountain Square campus. The image was taken in 1987. The Ohio Geological Survey's main office was located at Fountain Square on Morse Road, Columbus, Ohio 43229 from May 1973 to the present. The Geological Survey's offices were on the first and second floors of Building B from May 1973 until a move to the first and second floors of Building C in January 2005.
From Lisa Van Doren on 14 July 2016: Jim is writing out an order for “type” for the typesetter to produce. Every word/phrase/paragraph on a map/publication used to be hand written with specifications such as font type and point size, then handed off to our typesetter. She would then type it into her typesetting machine that would output a sheet of specialized paper with all the type we had requested. Output was actually from some machine in a different building at the time—I never really paid attention to her process unfortunately. That sheet of type was then run through a waxing machine that adhered wax to the back of the sheet. We would then cut out each word/phrase/paragraph and set it in place (pasteup) on a mylar sheet which had been pin-registered to the scribecoat. So you’d have little rectangles of black type on a white background all over the mylar which would then be shot into a negative. Not too long after I started (say 1986) we changed our method of pasteup for most projects. This was an innovation that Ed Kuehnle introduced to us that he had used at a previous job. Once we got the sheet of type from the typesetter we would shoot a negative of it and then make an image of that type on another specialized film that ended up being black type on a clear background that already had adhesive on the back. The clear background allowed us to be much more accurate in placing the type where we needed it on the mylar sheet over the scribecoat. Seems like a small change, but it was extremely helpful.
